Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
In addition to CBT, your counselor may also utilize other therapeutic approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT is a behavioral form of therapy that is based on mindfulness. Mindfulness refers to various skills that help you to: (1) redirect your attention, (2) separate yourself from your thoughts, (3) accept and allow your thoughts to flow freely, and (4) strengthen the part of yourself that just notices what you are thinking or feeling. Practicing mindfulness allows you to be guided rather than dominated by your thoughts. Doing this will allow you to “unhook” yourself from difficult thoughts and feelings in order to live a life that is purposeful and directed by your values rather than by your fears or negative emotions.
