Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of counseling that was first developed in the late 1960s as a way to help individuals challenge the negative thoughts that lead to distressing emotions. Since that time, CBT has become one of the most researched and effective forms of therapy for a variety of disorders, including the two most common types of disorders—depression and anxiety. In addition to being effective for a variety of disorders, CBT also embraces specific principles that make this form of therapy well suited for individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds. Some of these principles include an emphasis on personal empowerment, attention to client strengths and support systems, and affirmation of one's own sense of identity.
