About Janeé Steele

Dr. Janeé Steele is a licensed professional counselor, counselor educator, and diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies. Dr. Steele is also the owner and clinical director of Kalamazoo Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy, PLLC, where she provides therapy, supervision, and training in CBT. She is the author of the book, Racism and African American Mental Health: Using Cognitive Behavior Therapy to Empower Healing with foreword by Judith S. Beck, and the co-author of the book, Black Lives Are Beautiful: 50 Tools to Heal from Trauma and Promote Positive Racial Identity, both published through Routledge, an imprint of Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Her other scholarly activity includes service as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Multicultural Counseling & Development and authorship of peer-reviewed articles focused in the areas of CBT, social justice advocacy, and counselor training. Her favorite article, published in the May 2020 issue of the International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling and Development, describes cognitive conceptualization and treatment planning using CBT and a proposed cognitive model of internalized racism.

Trainings:

Dr. Steele conducts trainings and lectures for universities, professional organizations, and community businesses. Many of these trainings focus on cultural competence in therapy and the reduction of implicit bias in therapeutic and organizational settings. In 2022, her invited co-facilitated discussion of implicit bias in mental health was attended by nearly 900 members of the Michigan Psychological Association. Also in 2022, her webinar discussing her cognitive model of internalized racism was featured by the American Counseling Association as part of its BIPOC Awareness Month programming and has gone on to become one of the organization’s bestselling products. Most recently, Dr. Steele was invited to speak at Advia Credit Union’s Day of Development to over 200 employees on self-assessment of implicit bias.

Clinical Work:

Dr. Steele has over 15 years of clinical experience and 10 years of supervisory experience. During this time, Dr. Steele has become the owner and clinical director of Kalamazoo Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy where she provides therapy, supervision, and training in CBT. Additionally, she is certified in CBT by the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies. This certification includes over 40 hours of post-graduate training from the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy where she completed several specialized courses (Essentials of CBT, CBT for Anxiety, CBT for Depression, CBT for Personality Disorders, and Integrating Mindfulness into CBT), as well as having her clinical work successfully evaluated. Recently, her clinic Kalamazoo Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy, PLLC became a regional clinic affiliate of the National Social Anxiety Center (NSAC). This affiliation requires certification in cognitive-behavioral therapy by the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies, the American Board of Professional Psychology, or the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, as well as unanimous approval by the NSAC Board of Directors.

University Teaching:

Dr. Steele is part of the Core Faculty at Walden University. As Core Faculty in the School of Counseling at Walden University, her primary responsibilities are to teach master's level counseling courses, supervise students in the application of counseling techniques in clinical settings, and chair doctoral level dissertation committees. In addition to this role, she also served as the subject matter expert for the COUN 6753 Career Counseling course, and is now the primary lead faculty for this class. Beyond her teaching duties at Walden University, Dr. Steele also frequently adjuncts at Western Michigan University, where she teaches a variety of courses including those focused on CBT and research methods.

Research:

Dr. Steele is the author of peer-reviewed publications, books, and book chapters focused on culturally-adapted CBT, social justice advocacy, and research training. Her co-authored book Black Lives Are Beautiful can be ordered on Amazon.com. Other notable publications include “A CBT approach to internalized racism among African Americans,” which was included in the research base for a comprehensive evidence-based protocol for the treatment of racial trauma developed by leading racial trauma scholars, as well as “Preparing counselors to advocate for social justice: A liberation model,” which is foundational in the supervision and training of counselors to be social justice advocates in their professional roles.

Professional Service:

Dr. Steele is active within several counseling and mental health organizations. Having been an original member of the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies’ Diversity Action Committee, she is now Secretary on the Executive Committee of the organization. She is also an appointed member of the American Counseling Association’s Research and Knowledge Committee, and an appointed member of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision’s Webinar Subcommittee. Beyond this, she is a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT), the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (ACBT), the American Counseling Association (ACA), the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD), Chi Sigma Iota Counseling, Academic, and Professional Honor Society International (CSI), and the National Career Development Association (NCDA).
